Digital nomad basics: working remotely while you travel

What to check before you work from another country — employer permission, visas, tax residency, insurance, connectivity and time zones.

Remote work makes it possible to work while travelling, but “I can work from anywhere” is rarely true legally. Before you book, check these six things.

1. Your employer’s permission

Working from another country can create tax, payroll and legal obligations for your employer. Many companies cap work abroad at a set number of days a year or require approval. Always get permission in writing.

2. The right visa

Tourist visas usually don’t permit work, even for a foreign employer. Dozens of countries now offer digital nomad or remote-work visas, typically requiring proof of remote employment or income, health insurance and a clean record. Check the official government immigration website of the country you plan to visit — rules change often.

3. Tax residency

Staying in one country for a long period — often around 183 days in a year, though rules vary — can make you tax-resident there. Some countries also tax citizens wherever they live. Speak to a tax professional who works with internationally mobile people before you go.

4. Insurance

Standard travel insurance may exclude long stays or working. Look for long-stay or nomad-specific health cover, and check your equipment is insured abroad.

5. Connectivity

  • Ask accommodation for a speed-test screenshot before booking.
  • Carry a local SIM or eSIM as backup.
  • Find a coworking space near where you stay.
  • Use a reputable VPN on public networks if your employer allows it.

6. Time zones

A great beach is less great if your team meets at 2 a.m. Check overlap with the time-zone overlap finder before choosing a destination.
